The plot of the eighth season is being kept under tight wraps. However, it has been confirmed that the season will feature “the largest battle scene ever committed to film.” In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kit Harington (who plays Jon Snow) teased that the eighth season is “bloodier than ever”, and that there are “a lot of STAR WARS references”. He also said that the season is “quite sad” because a lot of characters die.
In September 2017, it was announced that Game of Thrones had surpassed The Sopranos as HBO’s most-watched series in history with an average gross audience of over 32 million viewers across all platforms. The seventh season finale was watched by 12.1 million viewers, making it the most-watched episode of the series and the most-watched television event of 2017.
The eighth season is expected to receive a similar reception. In October 2017, Kit Harington said that the final season is “beyond anything that anyone could imagine.” In January 2018, HBO’s president of programming Casey Bloys said that the eighth season is “truly remarkable” and that it will be worth the wait.
